The Centre for Local Studies contains:

  • The index to the registrars record of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales from 1837 (Microfiche)
  • Census records: 1841-1871 mainly South Durham on microfilm; 1881 England, Scotland and Wales on CD Rom and Durham, Northumberland and Yorkshire on microfiche; 1891 and 1901 for Historic County of Durham on microfiche.  Name indexes are available for the local area for 1851 and 1891.
  • Parish registers [pdf document] 
  • Monumental inscriptions [pdf document] 
  • International Genealogical Index (covers England, Scotland and Wales - Microfiche)
  • National Burial Index for England and Wales (1538-2000)
  • Darlington Cemetery Records: West cemetery from 1858.  East cemetery from 1928.  North cemetery from 1874.  Microfilm.
  • Boyds Marriage Index: 1538-1837 for Durham and Yorkshire.  Microfilm.
  • Electoral Registers: Darlington 1868, 1874, 1879, 1884 onwards.  County Durham 1974-1997.  Printed
  • Poll Books: South Durham Division 1790, 1820, 1833, 1838, 1841, 1865, 1868.  Printed.
  • Trade and Street Directories: Durham, Northumberland and Yorkshire from 1827 to 1974.  Mostly printed, some microfiche.
  • Soldiers Who Died in the Great War: Index to soldiers and officers.
  • Pedigrees: Index to local pedigrees held. 
  • Mining Deaths Index: National Index, 1850-1914. 
  • Poor Law Records: Miscellaneous for Darlington and Haughton-Le-Skerne.  Microfilm and printed
  • Maps: From 1826 to date
  • Local newspapers [pdf document]
  • Offical documents: including council minutes and reports, government document and business information
  • Durham record: A database containing over 10,000 photographs, old and modern mapping and the archaeological sites and monuments record for County Durham.

We also have a collection of books covering the whole of the North with emphasis on Darlington and the surrounding area (1700s to date) as well as printed ephemera, photographs and posters.

Copying facilities are available for printed, microform and CD Rom resources subject to copyright legislation and document condition.
 
As demand is heavy,  it is advisable to book an appointment if you wish to use microfilms, microfiches or CDs - call 01325 349630 for bookings.
 
Lockers are available at a small charge to secure personal belongings whilst using the Centre.
