Bollards

Cars often park on the verge where Stockton Road joins Winchester Way. This causes both damage to the verge and blocks visibility for those trying to leave the estate.  In order to prevent this parking we are suggesting a row of bollards to prevent parking at this location.

Mini Roundabout

At present the junction of Stockton Road and Winchester Way is a traditional style “T” junction arrangement.  We are suggesting repeating a similar design to that suggested at Salters Lane South for the following reasons:-

  • Moderate speed on this section of road by requiring vehicles to consider giving way at the roundabout.
  • Reduce through traffic and encourage use of the new Darlington Eastern Transport Corridor.
  • Give local residents priority rather than through traffic.
  • Provision of a pedestrian refuge across Winchester Way.

The reduction from two lanes to one for traffic joining Stockton Road from Winchester Way may be seen as a disadvantage by residents of this estate but this should be more than compensated for by only having to give way to one stream of traffic making emerging easier.

Toucan Crossing

A toucan crossing is proposed to replace the existing pedestrian refuge. A toucan crossing is a signal controlled crossing that can be used by both cyclists and pedestrian. This will link up with the recently constructed toucan crossing on Whinfield Road. The improved pedestrian facilities will improve access to the surrounding amenities in Whinfield and improve accessibility between the bus stops.

As well as providing a safe crossing point for all users the signals will help regulate the flow of traffic into Stockton Road and make it less attractive as a through route.

Bus Stop alterations

It is reported by bus companies that they experience difficulty leaving this lay-by and re-joining traffic. We are suggesting removing the lay-by to ensure buses can re-join traffic more easily.

Gateways

We have been asked to introduce some form of sign feature to announce to motorists that drivers are entering a village and they should moderate their speed. We are suggesting we do this with some signs announcing entry to Haughton Le Skerne.

Signing

The advanced signing on the approaches to Haughton will be re-visited as the Town Centre is signed through Stockton Road and Haughton Road. This will be reviewed to direct people onto the eastern transport corridor.
