The new Eastern Transport Corridor joins Haughton Road near the junction with Barton Street. The route will not be as attractive to through traffic as Haughton Road will no longer have priority into town. The signalised ‘throughabout’ junction shown below will give priority to traffic on the Eastern Transport Corridor and make it a more attractive route for commuters.

There are two bus stops in the area of Alexander Street - one outside No.244 and the other outside No.271 Haughton Road. We are looking to improve these stops by either:-

  1. Repainting the markings to prevent parking and allow the buses to get to the stops properly. This will reduce the amount of on-street parking available.
  2. Building a small platform out from the kerb for passengers to wait on. This would mean the bus would stop in the traffic lane, holding up the traffic, but will allow the bus to pull away as soon as it is ready to go, rather than having to wait for a gap in the traffic.

Although these hold ups will be inconvenient to other traffic they will discourage people from using this route as part of a longer journey.  The platform will also create space for people to wait away from properties, not blocking the footpath.

This section of Haughton Road already has a number of pedestrian refuges which makes crossing the road easier.

The junction with Blackett Road is the next location we have identified where some improvement could be made. The plan shows a comprehensive alteration to the road markings. The key feature are:-

  1. Safe places to wait to make right turns into Blackett Road and also the car dealership.
  2. The running lanes through the junction area will be narrower. This will encourage drivers to observe the speed limit.
  3. Two new pedestrian refuges to improve pedestrian crossing in the area and also improve access to the bus stops facilities.

The junction at McMullen Road remains unchanged but we will be monitoring this to see if the junction timings need adjusting in light of the changes in traffic volume.
