Village Entrance

We have been asked to introduce a sign to tell motorists that they are entering a village and they should moderate their speed. We are suggesting we do this with some signs announcing entry to Haughton Le Skerne.

Mini Roundabout

We are suggesting introducing a mini roundabout at the junction with Salters Lane South this will:-

  • Moderate speed through the village by requiring vehicles to consider giving way at the roundabout.
  • Reduce through traffic and encourage use of the new Darlington Eastern Transport Corridor.
  • Give local residents priority rather than through traffic.
  • Ease the sharp turn into Salters Lane South from Haughton Road

Street Furniture

Haughton le Skerne Village is in a conservation area and there is a large area of Village Green. Some of the sign posts and bollards could be improved. We are suggesting a review of the existing street furniture and replacing with designs that are more in-keeping with the historic setting.

Bus Stops

Within the Green there are two bus stops, in each direction, that are very close to each other. We are suggesting that there is only one in each direction.

The proposal shows both the stops out of town being removed and being replaced with a new one near the Church and Working Men’s Club. On the way into town we are proposing to keep the bus stop  in the middle of The Green.

This arrangement will place the stops either side of the existing pedestrian crossing, which will help passengers cross the road when they get off the bus.

This will improve bus services as they will not have to stop twice in a very short distance and will also allow some additional parking.

Pedestrian Crossing

The existing traffic signal puffin crossing will remain. However, we propose some new equipment and work to the existing kerbline. The narrower carriageway will encourage slower speeds and make it quicker for pedestrians to cross. This will allow the traffic lights to change to vehicle green sooner and operate more efficiently. It will also enable some parking and loading at the adjacent properties to be provided.

Mill Lane Junction on Stockton Road

The existing Mill Lane junction adjacent to The Highland Laddie public house is difficult for pedestrians as it is wide and doesn’t have a clearly defined route across it.

Vehicles also travel down here at speed.

Our plan involves removing the triangular island and providing a more traditional junction. This will require vehicles to slow down. The resulting pedestrian crossing point will be much shorter and will be provided with the correct tactile paving for the visually impaired.

Verge Hardening

An assessment has been undertaken as to where verge hardening could be done to assist with parking.  The Council has a policy that verges cannot be hardened with a certain distance of a healthy tree.
