Landscape Painting

Throughout its history, landscape has been one of arts most enduring features and the Arts Centre offers a range of courses focusing on this popular and challenging subject. Further Landscape Painting is a demonstration based watercolour course in which you will be encouraged to develop watercolour techniques working on a broad range of landscape subjects. Watercolour is usually diluted to the point where it is translucent and applied to paper in broad areas known as washes.  You will learn these techniques whilst utilising materials such as gums and pigments.

Experienced tutor Paul Dillon initially works by demonstration, discussing composition, possibly utilising a sketch or photograph to give students a starting point. From there you will work on a range of landscape subjects. You may, for example, choose to focus on a particular detail or opt to tackle a broad vista. In the past students of this course have progressed to Advanced Landscape. Here you will be able to develop your watercolour skills. The use of watercolour requires great skill since its transparency rules out over-painting and this course will allow you to begin to master this unique art. We also offer landscape classes for people wishing to work in oils in Further Oil Landscape Painting. Oils allow more time to blend colours and apply even glazes over under-paintings. Traditional oil painting techniques often begin with the artist sketching the figure onto the canvas. Then the artist builds the figure in layers, each additional layer oiler than the last, to allow proper drying.
