Life Drawing and Painting

For anyone wishing to take on the challenge of capturing the human form, we offer Life Drawing & Painting. Tutor Anita Dooley has been teaching the life drawing class for over thirteen years and is always keen to see students gain confidence in their work and themselves. Anita will offer encouragement on your work and advise you on materials and technique. Early sessions might see you studying a number of short poses of perhaps five minutes at a time, allowing you to begin to understand figure. As the class continues you may progress to working from one longer-held pose in a single session.

You’ll often work on something new each week, giving you the chance to date your pictures, take away your work and chart your progression. The human figure is one of the most popular themes in visual arts and figure drawing is arguably the most difficult subject an artist commonly encounters. This course will begin to equip you with the knowledge and technique to tackle this most enduring subject. You will work at your individual pace in a friendly and calming environment.

The Arts Centre can provide some materials but you will need a sketch pad, 2B and 6B pencils and an eraser. Previous class participants have displayed and sold their work in local galleries and organised displays through Darlington Society of Arts. Anita, a former winner of the Dover Prize, is keen to see you enjoy the class and take away as much confidence and skill as possible.
