A major large-scale sculpture created by leading British sculptor Angela Conner was unveiled at the Darlington Arts Centre on 9 July 2008, forming a new cultural landmark in the town.
Threshold is a landmark kinetic water sculpture commissioned as part of the refurbishment of Darlington Arts Centre. The sculpture forms an archway guiding visitors into building, consisting of 12-brushed stainless steel units measuring approximately 18 ft high. Each unit moves up and down individually due to the changing weight of water in a unique and subtle way. When the water is discharged by one of the units, it is guided down a waterfall then disappears to be recycled.
Angela Conner comments: “Threshold is something we all look for and gear ourselves to go beyond. The name ‘Threshold’ comes from the concept of people passing through from the city world into another world, that of the Arts Centre.
