Newby’s aim to challenge preconceived notions regarding the nature of steel and its possible forms has been at the basis of his work to date, which has varied from studio pieces to larger scale public art. He subverts the cold, clinical connotations that stainless steel invokes by turning it into something that appears soft, tactile and organic. When blown, metal undergoes a metamorphosis from a flat, static and unpliable state, into an animated and dynamic form with flawless mirror surfaces that appear to be in
constant flux.
Third Space is intended to explore a transformative liminal space in the relationships between object and viewer, sculpture and space. The objects are made meaningful not through their own essence, but through their interaction with the world around them and each other, opening up a dynamic and transitional space which exists as a site of interaction, conflict and mutual assimilation.
