Policy and procedure

Myles Meehan Gallery

Gallery policy

  • To support new and emerging Northern professional practising artists.
  • To programme one national exhibition each year.
  • To deliver 4 weeks of educational/outreach activity each year.
  • To broaden and develop understanding of contemporary art.
  • To continue to raise the profile of the gallery programme in a local and regional context.

Procedure

  • Artists invited to exhibit must be professional practising artists.
  • Before a meeting with the Visual & Public Art Officer (V&PAO) can be arranged, a current CV with quality slides, photographs or CD-ROM must be sent with a covering letter outlining the type of artwork and exhibition proposed with a clear and concise statement about the artwork.
  • If the artwork is accepted for exhibition the V&PAO will present the artwork to the Visual Arts Advisory Panel.
  • The artist(s) will then be contacted by letter regarding the outcome of the decision. If the artwork is not accepted then all CDs etc. will be returned with the letter if a paid postage, addressed envelope is included with the application form.
  • The decision made is final. There is no appeal system. If a new body of work is undertaken then this can be submitted, following this procedure.
  • When artwork is short-listed a meeting is arranged with the V&PAO to discuss the possibility of an exhibition.
  • An exhibition is formally offered when exhibition dates have been finalised by letter – this procedures document is sent out with the letter. To agree the offer, exhibitors are requested to confirm in writing.
  • All exhibitions are curated by the V&PAO.
  • All artwork must be fit for exhibition i.e. framed and mirror-plated.
  • All technical issues must be discussed in detail with the Visual Arts Technical Team at least 8 weeks in advance of the exhibition.
  • The artist(s) must supply quality images and an exhibition statement to the Marketing Manager for press releases, preview cards and posters at least 6 weeks before the exhibition.
  • The venue covers the fee for preview cards, publicity and insurance of the artwork.
  • The venue will apply for Exhibition Payment Right from the Regional Arts Board on behalf of the exhibitor(s) when appropriate.
  • Exhibitions are from 6 – 8 weeks at the discretion of the V&PAO.
  • It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to transport and insure all artwork to and from the venue. The venue may make a contribution to the transport costs within reason.
  • 3 days from a Monday – Wednesday are arranged for the delivery and installation of the exhibition.
  • Previews are on a Thursday evening between 6-8pm or lunchtime 12noon–2pm.
  • If the exhibition is a selling show then the gallery will take a 30% + VAT commission.
  • The exhibition must be collected promptly from the venue on the Monday after the exhibition finishes – the venue has no facility to store artwork.
