WELCOME TO THE SHERWOODS CHEVROLET DARLINGTON 10KM

This year will be the 23rd year for Darlington’s 10km road race.  The annual race, which will be held on Sunday 8th August 2010 has gone from strength to strength over its lifespan . The inaugural 10km, which was held on 3rd July 1988 had several hundred participants and was run largely on open roads. The current event is run on traffic free roads and attracts in excess of 1100 entrants.

Over the last 22 years the race has had several course changes; however,  this year the start and finish point will be exactly the same as 2009.

The major course change was in 2002 when the current two lap route was introduced and it enabled the race to be run over a completely closed route for the first time.  This was also the year that the current men’s course record was set by Martin Scaife.

Sunday 10th August 2003 was perhaps the most memorable race in the history of the event when an incredible storm descended on the town and over 30 days rain fell in just 20 minutes.  Large parts of the course were flooded and the race was just about to be halted, when the rain suddenly stopped, the skies cleared and the sun came out.  Ironically that day was and still is, the hottest day ever recorded in the United Kingdom when a temperature of 38.5C was recorded at Brogdale near Faversham in Kent!

For this year’s race all 10km entrants will receive personalised chip timing, which means times will be recorded for each person when they cross the start and finish lines rather than from when the starting pistol sounds.

The 10km will also be supported by our two other runs , the 3km Junior Race for young athletes aged between 11 and 16 and our Family Fun Run, which is effectively open to everyone. This ensures that there is an opportunity for all ages and abilities to take part in the event.

Following consultation with the police, a substantial traffic management plan has been devised and will be in operation on the morning of the event.  This is to provide all competitors with a traffic free course, which in turn ensures maximum safety for everyone involved.  This will mean that road closures will be in place.

Please view the road closures and the times that this will be in operation.  We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but are sure you understand the reasons why we take this course of action.
