Victorian Market Hall and Shops

The Victorian Market operates Monday to Saturday, 8am to 5pm all year round

This wonderful building has been successfully trading since 1863, providing shoppers with a variety of food and non-food items.  Many of the stallholders presently here have been trading for over 50 years, with a lot of the shops being passed down from generation to generation.

There are 73 stalls and 18 shops to cater for all your needs. Flowers, fresh meat, hardware, clothing, jewellery, cards and gifts are a small sample of the many goods on offer.

After shopping why not relax in one of our varied selection of eateries which includes a pavement café overlooking the picturesque market square.

General Open Market

Each Monday, Thursday and Saturday between 9am and 5pm, the town centre comes alive as traders offer an unrivalled selection of wares such as: household goods, fabrics, carpets and clothing.  The market has a heritage stretching back over 1000 years, so enjoy shopping in its unique atmosphere. The market is currently located in Tubwell Row, East Row, West Row and Horsemarket and wraps around the covered market.

At each market, we offer local non-profit organisations and fund raisers the chance to take up a free gazebo.  The “Charity Stall” is generally manned by a team of dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers. If you would like more information about the Charity Stall, please contact us.

Farmers Market

The Farmer’s Market is held on the third Friday of each month 9am until 5pm in West Row.

Introduced in September 2000, this market is designed to offer local farmers and producers the opportunity to trade directly with the residents and shoppers of Darlington. We are accredited members of the Farm and Retail Markets Association and so traders must be involved in the production of their goods.

Our regular visitors eagerly look forward to the market, and the range of goods available includes meat, vegetables, preserves, pies and cheeses.

Craft Fair

Our newly established craft fair is held on the second Friday of every month between 9am and 5pm in West Row. If you are on the lookout for unique items and rarities, this is definitely worth a visit.

Christingle Market

The Christingle Market is an annual event, held to support the town centre late night shopping initiative. Location and dates vary from year to year, but generally they are on the last few Thursdays before Christmas and ideal for that last minute special gift.

French and Continental Market

This popular market is run twice a year for three days, with food, gifts and various craft items available for sale.

Pot Fair

Our first Pot Fair was held at West Row between June 4-9 2007. It was a huge success and we are currently negotiating further dates.

Livestock Market

This market is operated by the Darlington Farmers Auction Mart Company Limited and is situated at Clifton Road, near to Bank Top railway station.

For more information contact Stephen Aitken on 01325 464529.

Rival Markets

Because Darlington is a Charter Market, it has the legal right to control other markets (which includes table top sales, car boot sales, fairs etc) to a distance of 6 and 2/3 miles from its markets.  Any person seeking to operate these types of event should always check with the Markets Office first and also with the local planning office.

The decision whether to grant a licence and/or impose a fee will depend entirely on the information provided.  In addition to a licence from the Council, operators should also remember their statutory obligations in respect of health and safety, food hygiene, insurance liabilities etc.

Market Charter

To promote our markets and inspire customer confidence, we have introduced a ‘Customer Charter’ to let people know that they have the same rights as they have in all other shops.  Ask the trader for a brochure – it is designed to be informative and avoid problems.

How we let the Stalls

For the Open Market, we operate a policy of controlling the balance of goods.  This is to ensure a wide mix of produce and not allow an oversupply at any one time.  Traders first attend as a casual and register their goods, provide proof of insurances and receive copies of the regulations and byelaws.

Our Farmers Market stalls can only be manned by the actual producer of the goods on display.  There is a strict policy of control so we can retain our Soil Association Accreditation.

Other speciality events have their own trader base.

The Covered Market stalls and shops operate under lease arrangements. Estates deal with the shops.
