I was elected to the Council on 8th May 1995 and I was Mayor of Darlington in the 2008/09 Municipal Year.

Mayoral Acceptance Speech

I am appointed to the following Committees:

• Efficiency and Resources Scrutiny Committee as the Chair
• Health and Partnerships Scrutiny Committee
• Human Resources Committee and a number of its Panels
• Monitoring and Co-ordination Group as the Chair
• Appraisal Sub-Group

I also represent the Council on a number of outside bodies, namely:

• Police Community Consultation Group [external link]
• Durham County Pension Fund Committee
• North East Purchasing Organisation (NEPO) [external link] 
• North East Regional Employers Organisation [external link]
• Tees Valley Rivers and Fisheries Association

In May 2012 I was also re-elected Chair of the Monitoring and Co-ordination Group of the Council, which examines the work programmes and reviews to be undertaken of each of the five Scrutiny Committees. This Group comprises the Chairs of each of the Council's Scrutiny Committees.

I promote the work of the Council at every possible opportunity.  I often achieve this by regional networking on Scrutiny or in my role as a facilitator for North Eastern Regional Employers Organisation; as an Audit Commission Accredited Inspector; or as a Peer Member for the Improvement and Development Agency.

My role also involves attending other meetings with Senior Officers of the Council throughout the year to discuss issues.  I have also attended training and development events to gain a better understanding of the work of the Council. All Councillors sign to attend a minimum of five training events each year.  Our attendances at training events are monitored by the Council’s Standards Committee.

I continue with my role as an active Ward Councillor for the Lingfield Ward of Darlington undertaking regular ward surgeries and ward tours and dealing with all issues raised by residents within the Ward.
