European Parliamentary Election - North East Region - 4th to 7th June, 2009

European Parliamentary elections take place every five years. 

In June 2004, three members were elected to serve on the European Parliament for the North East of England, for a five year term of office.  They deal with matters concerning the European Union and any member can be contacted on an issue.
 
A draft treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe was adopted by consensus by the European Convention on 13th June and 10th July, 2003, and was submitted to the President of the European Council in Rome on 18th July, 2003. 
 
The North East electoral region includes Darlington, Durham, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Northumberland, Redcar and Cleveland, Stockton-on-Tees and Tyne and Wear.

Elections were held in all 27 member states between 4th and 7th June, 2009.  The result of the election was announced on Sunday, 7th June, 2009.
