Elections/Register of Electors

Democratic Services are responsible  for the conduct of all Local (Borough and Parish), Parliamentary (General) and European Elections and Referendums.  We are also responsible for compiling and producing the Register of Electors for the Borough.

Register of Electors

Darlington Borough produces and maintains a Register of Electors.  Only people whose name appears on this register are allowed to vote.  A new Register is published each year on 1st December and is updated monthly between January and September.  There are no monthly updates during the annual canvass period (October and November).  To check if you are registered to vote or to update your details telephone (01325) 388351 or email Elections@darlington.gov.uk

Elections

Local (Borough and Parish) Elections

There are 24 wards in Darlington, each represented by 1, 2 or 3 Councillors.  Local Elections are held every 4 years, with the next Local Elections being held on in 2011.  Normal hours of poll at a Local Government Election are between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Parliamentary (General) Elections

Parliamentary (General) Elections are held within 5 years of the last election, they can be called at any time by the Government in power.  The last UK Parliamentary Election was held on 5th May, 2005.  The last possible date for the next UK Parliamentary Election will be June 2010.

European Parliamentary Elections are held every 5 years, normally in June.  The last European Election was held on 10th June, 2004.

Referendums

A Referendum is held when the Government has a question that it wants to consult the electorate on, i.e. entering the Euro Currency.  Referendums can also be held on local issues such as Elected Mayors and Regional Assemblies.
