Mayoral Referendum Results

These are the results of Darlington's referendum on an elected mayor which was held on September 27 2007. The referendum asked:

Are you in favour of the proposal for Darlington Borough Council to be run in a new way, which includes a mayor, who will be elected by voters of that Borough, to be in charge of the Council's services and to lead Darlington Borough Council and the community which it serves?

Votes counted: 19217

What does this result mean?

  • Darlington will not have an elected Mayor
  • The Council will continue to have a Leader and Cabinet to run the services and to lead the community
  • Local elections will continue to be held every four years, and the Council will select the Leader every year from amongst the elected councillors.
  • Darlington will not be able to have another referendum for five years (this could be 10 years if proposed legislation is adopted later this year)
