Improvement rates that are faster than the national average have helped Darlington to become the region's highest placed education authority in the Government's league tables. Focused sharply on raising standards and inclusion, the education authority provides responsive support to its 41schools. Still a relatively young education authority, having taken over responsibility for providing education services in Darlington as recently as 1997, the department's first OFSTED praised the service for the progress it has made to date.
