Durham & Darlington Education Service for Travelling Children works across the two Authorities to ensure that Gypsy and Traveller families have unhindered access to education. The Service aims to raise educational achievement, improve attendance and support schools and nurseries to celebrate diversity, eliminate discrimination and promote equality of opportunity and good race relations.
In order to build trust and confidence and positive attitudes to education, our two Early Years Workers help Gypsy and Traveller families with young children gain access to good quality play materials and learning opportunities within the home as well as developing culturally specific materials for all. These materials, which feature Durham & Darlington children are for parents to share with their children, as well as all educational establishments, whether or not they have Gypsies and/or Travellers on roll.
