What is a Children’s Centre?
A Children’s Centre is a ‘one stop shop’ delivering easily accessible services for families with young children.
Most of Darlington’s Children’s Centres are SureStart Centres and/or some are extended Neighbourhood Nurseries offer the following core services for pre-school children and their families:
- Early education integrated with childcare
- Child and family health services
- Family support
- Support for children & families with disabilities and special needs.
- Access to Darlington Children's Information Service
Childrens Centres are located at Mount Pleasant, McNay Street, Maidendale, Skerne Park, Red Hall and Dodmire.
During 2006-08 the intention is to develop the ‘outreach’ facility at Dodmire into a full Children’s Centre and create another full Children’s Centre to serve the Haughton area. Children’s Centre ‘outreach’ facilities will also be developed in the more rural areas of Sadberge and Middleton-St-George.
During 2008-10 access to Children’s Centre services will be developed in the remaining areas of town and the rural wards of Hurworth and Heighington and Coniscliffe.
