Who is the sponsor of Darlington’s Academy?

The Church of England will be the sponsor of the Darlington Academy. The Church of England has a proven track record of delivering high quality education through its Voluntary Controlled, Voluntary Aided and Academy schools.

What is the role of the sponsor?

As a sponsor of the Darlington Academy, the Church of England has given a commitment to work alongside and assist the Local Authority in establishing an academy.

Sponsors bring a commitment to the best possible education for students in their academies.  Above all, they bring a vision which inspires and motivates everyone involved – students, parents, staff and the community.

Sponsors contribute to the building costs of the Academy and that is important, but more important is the successful experience they bring from outside. They also bring personal commitment, energy, drive and ambition, as well as a set of skills and experience. The Church of England has a national and local track record of leadership in primary and secondary schools.

Can the sponsor interfere in the curriculum?

The sponsor is able to influence curriculum in an academy but the sponsor of the Darlington Academy (The Church of England) has given a public commitment to work with our family of secondary schools in delivering the national curriculum.

Can other faith groups use facilities at the proposed academy?

The Church of England has given a clear commitment to allow the facilities at the Academy to be available to both the pupils at the school and the wider community.

Will the Church of England cater for people of other religions/faiths?

Yes  - The Church of England's view is the Academy will be " distinctive but inclusive." The Church of England has many schools attended by people of other faiths. In some areas, pupils of other faith groups are in the majority, as the schools serve the needs of their local communities. 

How long does the sponsor sign up to the Academy and what happens if the sponsor changes?

The Church of England has given a life-time commitment to the Academy.

What assurances can the Church give about the levels of attainment that will be achieved in bringing together a successful and unsuccessful school?
