Staff/Governance/Management - Questions Answered

Who is in charge at an academy?

The day-to-day running of an academy is, as in all schools, in the hands of a Head teacher or principal and their senior management team.  The Academy would have its own governing body, chaired by someone nominated by the Diocese.  The church is clear that it wants a governing body firmly rooted in the communities it serves.  Other governors would be appointed or elected and would include parents, community representatives, head teacher, staff representatives and the local authority.

What will be the terms and conditions for staff?

The Church of England has confirmed that, in line with existing Church of England academies, national teachers pay and conditions will be maintained within the Darlington Academy.

What about union recognition?

The Church of England has confirmed that, in line with its other academies, teaching and non-teaching unions will not just be recognised but encouraged. The Church appreciates the important role unions play in representing the views of their members.

What about the leadership and management structure?

National policy requires that the Principal or Head teacher post at the Darlington Academy must be subject to national advertisement, to ensure that the best candidate is appointed to this important post.
