What is an Academy?
Academies are new wide ranging schools designed to meet the needs of today.
Academies are all ability schools established by sponsors working in partnership with central government and local education providers.
Academies are independently governed, state-funded schools, at which education is free to students. They have a number of freedoms to innovate to provide the best educational opportunities for their students.
Academies are not controlled by a Local Authority, but by an ‘Academy Trust’, a registered charity established by the Sponsors. The Trust works with the DfES to appoint the Academy's overall Principal. The Trustees also appoint some of the governors of the school. The Local Authority, parents, staff and the wider community are all represented.
The proposed Eastbourne Church of England Academy would provide an excellent environment for teaching and learning. It would offer a broad and balanced curriculum focusing on two specialist areas, Technology and Citizenship.
As well as providing the best opportunities for their pupils, Academies have a key part to play in the regeneration of the local community. The proposed Academy would offer local solutions for local needs.
An outline planning application has been submitted for the erection of an Academy to replace the existing Eastbourne School. Click here for details of associated parking, sports facilities and infrastructure.
