What do I do if I have concerns about my child’s vision?

Anyone who has a concern that there child may be having difficulties with their eye sight should seek help and advice;

Every child under the age of 16 (or 19 if they are in full time education) is entitled to a free NHS sight test. So if you or your child’s teacher has a concern, go along to your local optician and ask for an eye test.

Many common childhood eye conditions such as lazy eye and squint can often be treated if caught at an early age. Early examination may also identify rarer and more serious problems which, if left untreated, can lead to blindness.

Contact your own G.P. if you are concerned about your child’s sight. They may advise you on medical treatment or contact the hospital for your child to be seen by a consultant.

Normally children are referred to the service by; the hospital, the child development centre (CDC), or the school.
