The Council has progressive plans to protect and improve Darlington's environment and natural heritage. Schemes include Boroughwide recycling, encouragement for natural habitats and species, including Britain's rarest native tree, the Black Poplar; successful home composting campaigns, the installation of solar powered parking meters and bus shelters and regular Farmer's markets. Winners of numerous floral awards - including two Chelsea Flower Show medals - Darlington's horticultural attractions are legendary. The attractive town centre also boasts South Park, a fine example of a Victorian Park which is currently undergoing a £3million restoration and the multi-award winning River Skerne Restoration Project.
