There are 320 kilometres of Public Rights of Way in the Darlington Borough as well as a selection of highly accessible and attractive nature reserves, wildlife sites and recreational woodlands located right on the doorstep.

Darlington's network of footpaths and bridleways provide an extensive facility for walking, cycling and riding.

Darlington runs a rich and varied countryside events programme that is advertised on a quarterly basis.

Countryside Leaflets and Publications

We have a rapidly expanding number of leaflets and publications to help people enjoy the countryside. These include a range of walks leaflets including the Teesdale Way as well as a set of guides to our  wildlife sites and recreational woodlands.

Partnership Working

The Council works hand in hand with other conservation organisations to help deliver the countryside people want.

Getting Involved

Community Steering Groups are local people helping to shape the future of some of our sites, the Black Poplar Project is the Council's nationally renowned project to save Britain's rarest native tree.

Why not become a Countryside Volunteer and help create the quality of countryside we all wish to enjoy? If you would like more information on Community Steering Groups or if you wish to become a Countryside Volunteer, please contact us at countryside@darlington.gov.uk

Darlington plays a full and active part in the Biodiversity Action Plan Process through its involvement with the Durham and Tees Valley biodiversity action plans.
