The National Clean Air Award is the first UK-wide scheme that rewards employers who implement effective work place no-smoking policies. There are two categories:
- Gold Award for completely smoke free premises
- Silver Award for premises having smoke-free offices etc but which provide an outside shelter for smokers.
These awards were developed by the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and are also promoted by Fresh-Smoke Free North East. For Darlington the Council's Public Protection Division and the NHS Darlington Primary Care Trust administer the awards, .
