Stereo equipment

Here are some simple remedies that can help to minimise the impact of noise

Home/Entertainment

  • Keep the volume down especially at night or early morning.
  • Place speakers away from party walls and stand them on insulating materials.
  • If you are having a party, consider inviting the neighbours, keep windows and doors closed and if someone complains turn the music down.
  • If you play a musical instrument (particularly amplified equipment) keep the volume down, windows shut and agree times to practice when you will cause least disturbance.

Alarms

  • if you have a house or car alarm, leave a key with a neighbour or let them know where you or friend who has a key can be contacted when you are away in case it is accidentally set off.
  • Ensure that the alarm is fitted with a cut-out device which will automatically switch it off after a maximum of 20 minutes (notify your insurance company as failure to do so could make any claim invalid)
  • Make sure that windows are shut when the house or car is empty to avoid accidental alarms.
  • Have the alarm serviced regularly by a competent person.

Your Home

  • Avoid slamming doors and stamping up and down stairs, especially if you live in a flat or terraced house.
  • Install draught excluders on doors - these will not only reduce cold draughts but will also stop doors banging (make ensure that you have adequate ventilation in any rooms with gas appliances)
  • If you have stripped or laminate flooring, be a considerate neighbour and wear slippers in the house rather than heavy boots or shoes.
  • If installing laminated flooring, use sound insulating underlay.
  • Use noisy equipment at sensible times and make sure that appliances such as washing machines and fridges are on a carpet or mat to reduce noise and vibration
  • Wherever possible avoid having noisy areas (e.g. kitchens, living rooms) next to your neighbours quiet spaces (e.g. bedrooms, study)

Maintenance/DIY

  • Avoid doing noisy work or using noisy equipment when your neighbours are likely to be asleep or enjoying a quiet night in.
  • If you have to do some really noisy work, let your neighbours know beforehand - they are far less likely to complain .
  • If you carry out car repairs or other noisy outdoor jobs, do these in a garage if you can and at a time when they will cause least disturbance.
  • If you are employing a builder, agree working times with them that will not annoy your neighbours - or you!

Your Garden

  • Think before installing features in your garden which make a noise - the splashing of a fountain or the tinkling of wind chimes may be soothing on a sunny afternoon but could drive your neighbours mad at night.
  • Use power tools with discretion - avoid cutting or strimming the grass when your neighbours are trying to relax in the sun.
  • When entertaining in the garden remember that sound travels and avoid amplified music outdoors.
  • If you are buying a new appliance, such as a lawn mower - ask the supplier for one with a low noise rating.
