Street Scene is the name for staff such as refuse collectors, gardeners and street cleaners in Darlington. The staff are multi-skilled, working in teams dedicated to specific areas of the town. The teams have close relationships with community and residents’ groups, encouraging everyone to care about their local environment and work to improve it.

What your Street Scene team will do for you

  • Rubbish collection
  • Recycling collection
  • Bus stop and street furniture cleaning
  • Empty litter bins
  • Empty dog bins
  • Street cleaning, including fly tip removal, sweeping and litter picking on all public open spaces
  • Chewing gum removal
  • Graffiti removal
  • Mechanical sweeping
  • Gully flushing and cleansing
  • Household clearance
  • Collect trade waste
  • Collect clinical waste
  • Improving safety for the public on roads and pavements including footpaths, manholes, potholes and lifted flagstones.
  • Maintain street signs and lights
  • Grounds maintenance including: grass cutting, parks and open spaces, hedge and shrub pruning, floral displays and maintenance, leaf clearance, cemeteries and burial grounds, sports pitches and bowling greens (but not South Park or Stressholme, which have their own teams).

The aims of your Street Scene Team

    You told us you wanted us to improve community services in the town. As part of Street Scene we aim to:

    • Keep our streets and open spaces free from litter.We will aim to clean our town centre daily and keep it free of litter
    • Empty all dog bins and litter bins regularly
    • Remove any bulky household waste which is reported to us within five working days
    • Remove fly tipping within 24 hours of it being reported
    • Collect your rubbish weekly. If we miss your rubbish, we will aim to collect it the same day and no later than the next working day
    • Collect recycling fortnightly, and collect any missed recycling the same day where possible and no later than the next working day
    • Contact utility companies to clean up graffiti on their property.We will aim to remove graffiti and fly-posting that is of an obscene or racially abusive nature within 24 hours of reporting and all other material within five working days
    • Regularly cut grass in and around the Borough
    • Arrange the removal of abandoned cars within 48 hours of reporting
    • Continue to crackdown on dog fouling and people who drop litter by issuing fixed penalty notices
    • Provide value for money, efficient services
    • Train and encourage our staff to be more pro-active in dealing with issues so members of the public do not need to report incidents
    • Respond promptly to your comments and complaints
    • Be courteous and helpful at all times
