Making Waste Work
Record Recycling Amounts

18/07/08 - DARLINGTON residents have shown they are making waste work by recycling record amounts.

In May, more than 71 per cent of waste taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Whessoe Road was recycled – a record for the site and ten per cent more than the previous month.

Among the waste recycled from the site in May was almost 600 tonnes of garden waste and 710 tonnes of soil and rubble.

The Household Waste Recycling Centre is open seven days a week for all kinds of household waste including glass, clothes. batteries, aluminium, cardboard and electrical items.

The waste is sorted at the site and as much as possible is recycled, reducing the amount of the Borough’s waste which goes to landfill.

The impressive recycling figures for May were further boosted by residents taking part in the kerbside recycling scheme and using recycle points across the Borough.

Nick Wallis, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member for Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, said: “These latest figures are very impressive and a record for the site. It shows that the people of Darlington are committed to Making Waste Work and I hope we can build on this success in the coming months.”
