What are Street Champions?
Street Champions is a Darlington Borough Council initiative, which aims to encourage residents to report environmental issues to Street Scene.
The scheme has been running since Spring 2007 and to this date there are now 295 residents who have joined the project. By reporting environmental issues to Street Scene, areas can be kept clean and local environments are rapidly improved.
What does a Street Champion do?
Street Champions report environmental issues to Street Scene through a phone call, email or face to face at the Town Hall. The type of issues that residents report include litter, fly tipping, graffiti, smashed glass, dog fouling and broken street furniture. They may also report issues to the enforcement team if they have information about an environmental crime that has been committed which could lead to a prosecution.
Issues you may report could be within your street or neighbourhood or could be in any other area of the Darlington Borough that you may witness.
Street Champions act as the eyes and ears for Street Scene as they bring environmental issues to their attention so they can be fixed. By taking this approach areas can be kept clean ensuring our environment is a cleaner and safer place to live.
The project has been a fantastic success with an average of 40 reports being made every month. Some Street Champions litter pick their street or local green space and some are also involved with other community groups or projects.
Why become a Street Champion?
If you want to make a difference to your local environment, this is the project for you! We welcome all enthusiastic and passionate people who truly want to change where we live. Reporting issues can make changes to day-to-day issues we usually face when leaving our house.
Being a Street Champion isn’t time consuming and you can become involved as often and as much as you like.
