Towards a Sustainable Darlington
Local Agenda 21
The term Local Agenda 21 refers to the need to plan for and achieve sustainable development in the Twenty First Century, by taking actions locally.
At the Earth Summit in 1992 in Rio de Janiero, the Agenda 21 Treaty was signed by 179 countries. The Agenda 21 treaty was the response to growing concern over environmental degradation and increased levels of poverty globally.
What is Sustainable Development?
Sustainable Development is defined as ‘development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
There are broadly accepted and severe threats to the well being of all of the world’s inhabitants. The changes we are facing are quite often bewildering. We need to make changes to the way we live our lives, we cannot continue to live as we have done. Sustainable Development is an approach which aims to balances the social, economic and environmental impact of our actions
...its aim is to achieve a better quality of life for all. It achieves social and economic progress, whilst protecting and enhancing the environment.
What does this mean in Darlington?
Sustainable Development is important to every person living in Darlington. It is about our Quality of Life. It should reflect your concerns as a resident living in Darlington.
Sustainable Development is a concept which affects everyone’s lives. It is a challenge that affects everyone, not just Government. It should involve local people, community groups, voluntary organizations, decision makers, local businesses, everybody who has an interest in the development of Darlington.
Whilst national and local government involvement in Agenda 21 is essential, everyone in the community has a role to play, from schools to businesses, from church congregations to farmers and from neighbourhood groups to non-governmental organisations.
