The Darlington Borough Area: What does it include?

General

The Borough of Darlington covers an area of almost 200 km².  It encompasses the town of Darlington, plus a rural area consisting of 26 civil parishes.  It includes two parliamentary constituencies, the whole of Darlington Constituency and part of Sedgefield Constituency (see MPs).

Postcodes

The Borough of Darlington covers the following postcode districts:  the whole of DL3; almost all of DL1; a large part of DL2; small parts of DL4, DL5, and DL6; a tiny part of DL14; and a sizable part of TS21.

The following schedule of postcodes may be used to help to determine whether a given property lies within the borough:

Points to Note

  • The southern boundary is formed by the River Tees, from west of Piercebridge to east of Middleton One Row.  The whole of the Darlington Borough is north of the river.

  • The borough boundary corresponds exactly to civil parish boundaries.  Thus there are no parishes that are split across different boroughs.

  • Unfortunately, a property's postal address is not necessarily a reliable indicator of which local authority it lies in.  This is because there are some rural properties within the Darlington Borough, but near the outskirts, whose address reflects their proximity to a nearby village or town beyond the boundary (e.g. Stillington, Shildon, Newton Aycliffe, or even Stockton).  Conversely, there may also be properties beyond the boundary whose address includes Darlington.  Please email us on propertyaddress@darlington.gov.uk if you require clarification about an individual property.

More Detail

A set of boundary maps is available.  Each map shows a short section of the boundary in detail.
