06/07/04 - Safety, safety and more safety is top of the list of lessons this week for all year six pupils in Darlington as they take part in a Safety Carousel event at Darlington Fire Station.
Pupils will be visiting the station to take part in the event that covers key aspects of safety awareness including road safety, electrical safety, drugs and fire safety. Each session lasts just over an hour and involves the pupils being split into five groups. Each group then spends ten minutes on one of the five aspects of safety and moves onto the next section when the bell rings.
Darlington Borough Council's Road Safety team will be in attendance to present the road safety aspect of the course. Their presentation includes a scale model of a car with a ramp and crash test dummy to demonstrate the importance of not just wearing a seat belt but of wearing it correctly.
Talking about the event, Councillor Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport said:
"Our involvement in the Safety Carousel shows our commitment to address road safety issues at all levels especially when it comes to reaching young people with such an important message as this. We are delighted to be working with the team at Darlington Fire Station and I hope that following the event, the pupils take away with them a heightened awareness of all aspects of safety."
