PUPILS' ANTI-LITTER WORK

25/03/04 - Pupils at Darlington's Hummersknott School & Language College are continuing their support for the Council's anti-litter campaign through arranging for litter pick-ups and the installation of more litterbins outside their school.

The pupils are proactive supporters of Darlington Council's anti-litter campaign and were recently awarded the Council's Caring for our Environment Award in recognition of their anti-litter work.

Hummersknott pupils made addressing the issue of litter in and around the school grounds a matter of priority last year and worked with the Council's Environmental Services Team on identifying sources of litter in a move to reduce littering. The pupils conducted a litter survey which identified litter hotspots on the school grounds and litter problems in areas surrounding the school, in particular en-route between the school and the local Mowden shopping area.

The pupils have worked with the Council's Environmental Services Team to arrange for additional litter bins to be placed at key sites to reduce littering and for a Council litter picker to carry out litter pick up patrols outside the school twice a week.

Pat Howarth, Hummersknott School & Language College Headteacher, said: " We are delighted that our pupils continue to work with the Council's litter teams to improve the environment. The pupils' efforts  have given them good experience in working with the local authority and has contributed to work in Citizenship within the school curriculum. The project has been successful in reducing the litter problem in school and we will continue to address concerns raised in the local area".

Chris McEwan, the Council's Cabinet Member for Community Protection, said: "Pupils at Hummersknott School & Language College have shown great ongoing support for the Council's anti-litter campaign. Their work should benefit their school and local community."
