World Wetlands Day

23/01/06 - PEOPLE in Darlington are being called on to help manage wetland sites in the Borough as part of World Wetlands Day.

World Wetlands Day, on Thursday February 2, was celebrated for the first time in 1997.

Each year, governments, local councils and conservation groups around the world use the day to raise public awareness of the value of wetland to communities.

In Darlington, volunteers are being asked to carry out work at Brankin Moor Local Nature Reserve on World Wetlands Day with members of Darlington Council’s countryside team and the Tees Forest Land Services.

Brankin Moor is one of Darlington’s latest designated local nature reserves.

The Reserve is a regionally important site for dragonfly and also an excellent habitat for songbirds.

Volunteers will be asked to help with projects such as pond clearance at the site.

Stephen Harker, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member for Consumer and Environmental Services said: “World Wetlands Day is a great opportunity for people to work in their local community and make a real difference.

“Brankin Moor Local Nature Reserve is an important site and the work on World Wetlands Day will make sure it can be enjoyed by as many people as possible.”

Anyone wanting to take part is asked to bring suitable footwear, waterproof clothing and a packed lunch.

Volunteers should meet at 10.30am at the Brankin Moor Local Nature Reserve (Neasham Road- on the left hand side if travelling from the town centre towards the football stadium)
