Cut-Price Composters For Sale
26/05/06 - RESIDENTS throughout Darlington and County Durham are being offered the chance to buy home composters at greatly reduced prices
The cut-price bins are being sold to encourage more people in the area to recycle and in turn reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfill.
A similar offer last year saw almost 20,000 residents get their own home composter and it is hoped even more people will sign up this year.
Letters are being sent to homes throughout the area advertising the bins and explaining what can be put in them to make compost.
There are three sizes of bins for sale: 220 litre bins for £4 (SRP £39.95), 330 litre bins for £6 (SRP £49.95) and 700 litre bins for £20 (SRP £106.95).
There is a limit of three bins per household.
Stephen Harker, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member for Consumer and Environmental Services said: “Composting is another way for residents to make a significant impact on the amount of landfill we produce.
“Composting is for everyone - not just keen gardeners. It is surprisingly easy to make great plant food out of your organic waste. Composting also cuts down on bills at the garden centre, as the compost you make is absolutely free.”
Around 30 per cent of household waste is organic and can be composted, including dead flowers, leaves, grass cuttings, raw fruit and vegetables.
The cut-price bin scheme is organised by Darlington Borough Council, Durham County Council and WRAP - the Waste & Resources Action programme - a government-funded initiative to promote recycling.
Residents can call 0845 077 0757 to order their compost bin. Bins come with free delivery as well as a free guide to information and advice.
