Council Welcomes Support For Parents

21/11/06 - DARLINGTON Council has today welcomed a £4m initiative designed to support parents whose families could get involved in anti-social behaviour.

The Government scheme will ensure that parents get the help they may need in putting an end to their children’s poor behaviour.

Darlington is one of 77 areas across England that will pilot projects using parenting experts to provide vital assistance.

The initiative ties in with the work already being undertaken in the Borough through the £8m Local Area Agreement (LAA) – a three-year deal encouraging groups to work together for the benefit of the community.

Darlington’s LAA, which was signed earlier this year, is unique in that it focuses entirely on creating more opportunities for children and teenagers.

Over the coming months, the Council will be looking at how best to take the parenting project forward to benefit local families.

Bill Dixon, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Public Protection, said: “The Government’s announcement today is very welcome. There is already a significant amount of work going on in Darlington through the LAA and we will be looking at how this latest initiative can help to nip the problem of anti-social behaviour among youngsters in the bud.”
