Safety First For Youngsters
25/10/06 - CHILDREN have been getting creative over the important issue of road safety in Darlington this week.
Youngsters who attend a Safe Play club at All Saints Church, in Ravensdale Road, have enjoyed a colouring competition, as part of Darlington Council’s Let’s Get Cracking campaign.
The scheme is seeing £2.5m invested in improving the standard of roads and footpaths across the Borough.
The project came about after nearly 1,000 residents responded to surveys issued by the Council, asking people to point out locations that were in need of maintenance work.
The Council and contractors Alfred McAlpine are now working to tackle problems in dozens of areas.
The latest phase of the scheme has included work in Ravensdale Road, Hartford Road, Glendale Drive and other West End streets.
As part of the programme, Let’s Get Cracking Public Liaison Officer Melanie Morley visited the club to talk to the children about the importance of staying safe while work is carried out nearby.
After the talk, the youngsters set about designing their own road safety posters, with a toy JCB prize to be awarded for the best.
Nick Wallis, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “The Let’s Get Cracking scheme is a first-class example of the Council engaging with the local community.
“I am delighted that the Safe Play club has taken an interest in the scheme and hope the children enjoyed creating their designs.”
