Students, pupils and community groups have been working with professional artists, Andrew Allan, from NE Art, and Amy Johnson, from The Art Workshops, to produce models and costume for the carnival procession.
Sculptures inspired by the weather, including a giant fish, will form part of the procession on Saturday June 28, from the Arts Centre in Vane Terrace at noon, through the town centre to Stanhope Park.
The theme of the event is Festivals of the World and community groups of all ages are taking part in activities and entertainment at Stanhope Park until 5pm.
Andrew Allan said: “Amy and I are proud to be leading the Carnival for a second year running - as nationally recognised artists, we always enjoy an opportunity to work within our local environment.
“We would like to express our gratitude to everyone for their continuing support with this celebratory family day.”
All money raised at the carnival will go to local charity Family Help, which helps victims and survivors of domestic abuse.
