Members of the Steam Shed Theatre Company have created the globe for the carnival, which this year has the theme of festivals of the world.
To promote the carnival which takes place on Saturday June 28, children from Steam Shed, based at the Education Village, will be performing at Prospect Place in the Town Centre on Saturday June 21.
The children’s performance looks at life on an imagined, perfect eighth continent and as part of the carnival procession they will push their large globe through the streets. Members of the public will be asked to write down their wishes for a new continent and post them into the globe as it passes by.
In the week after the carnival the wishes will be collected and the children will use the ideas to create another performance in December.
In the run up to the carnival, children and community groups from across the Borough have been taking part in free workshops, led by professional artists, to create puppets, banners and costumes.
The event, sponsored by the Co-op Membership and supported by the Council’s Making Waste Work campaign, is raising money for Family Help in Darlington, which works with domestic abuse survivors.
The parade through the town centre starts at noon and ends in Stanhope Park at 1pm where there will be children’s workshops and free family entertainment and activities until 5pm. There will also be NewBlood Live concert with bands performing courtesy of the Council's Youth Service and The Forum.
From 8pm, the fun moves inside with R&B band Off The Wall performing at the Arts Centre.
