Fine Warning For Car Litter Louts

17/06/08 - AS work gets underway to clean and tidy roadside verges across the Borough, the Council is warning litter louts they face being fined.

The Council is supporting the Campaign to Protect Rural England’s (CPRE) latest initiative to stop people throwing rubbish from their cars.

Street Scene workers spend a significant amount of time picking up litter thrown from cars into hedgerows and verges and are currently cleaning up and tidying verges across the Borough.

People who thrown rubbish from cars can be fined £75, and if they ignore the fine they can face prosecution and a criminal record.

Bill Dixon, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services and Community Safety, said:  “It is good to be part of this national initiative by CPRE. Not only is chucking rubbish out of car windows completely thoughtless and anti social, it ends up costing residents, through the council tax, money top clean up”.

Volunteers often help Street Scene staff with litter picks and the Litter Free Durham Action Group is looking for local people to help out with future events. Anyone interested should e-mail LitterFreeDurham@hotmail.co.uk or call Street Scene on (01325) 388777.
