Pupils help shape primary school curriculum at national event

17/06/08 - TEN pupils from a Darlington primary school have been helping to shape the national curriculum.

The Year 6 students from the Federation of Abbey Schools attended the National College for School Leadership conference in Nottingham where they have a presentation about what they think makes learning exciting.
The pupils talked about how much they enjoy learning through teaching outdoors and how the school works with six others in the Borough, which follow the same ethos.
Their presentation to Mick Waters, Director of Curriculum from the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, contributed towards a new Children’s Charter which will be used to inform a review of the primary curriculum nationally.
George Ford, Head teacher, said: “Involving pupils in making decisions on the way they are taught, means they are helping to set out the teaching practices of the future.
Elaine McCue, Head teacher, said: “It was an exciting day for the pupils, they were among 150 from across the country, giving their views on how they like to learn outdoors and talking about the kinds of projects we do outdoors.”
