Teenagers Set To Welcome African Visitors

13/06/08 - A GROUP of young people from Lesotho are preparing to come to the Darlington.

The young people, who are members of a group called Youth Against HIV, met a group of Darlington teenagers last year when they visited South Africa to share information and experiences about peer mentoring and sexual health education

When they returned to Darlington the members of Raising Awareness in Darlington (RAID) started fund-raising to pay for some of the African teenagers to visit the North-East.

The group will be in Darlington from July 13 to July 30 and will visit schools, youth clubs, community groups and faith groups.

They will also be involved in a range of workshops discussing topics that affect young people including:
· HIV and AIDS
· Alcohol and substance misuse.
· Politics.
· Youth rights and responsibilities.
· Life skills

Chris McEwan, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “As soon as the RAID group came back from Lesotho they decided to raise money so the young people from Africa could visit here.

”They have worked very hard and I know they are looking forward to catching up with their new friends. There are lots of activities and events arranged for the young people during their stay and I am sure they will have an interesting and fun time.”
