People who use electric wheelchairs or scooters in and around Darlington are encouraged to follow some simple rules of the road to protect themselves and others. The rules ensure that people using wheelchairs and scooters are safe and visible to all road users. You can read the rules on the Shopmobility pages of the Darlington Association on Disability website [external link] and scroll down to "rules of the road". The website also includes information about buying and operating an electric wheelchair/scooter safely.

Veronica Copeland, Darlington Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Services, said: "Electric wheelchairs and scooters give people great freedom but it is important that those who use them think about their own, and other people's safety, especially if they are on the road. The Darlington Association on Disability website has lots of information to ensure people who use scooters and wheelchairs do so correctly, can be seen and keep safe."
