Applying for a Council Home

Who Can Apply?

The Waiting List for housing is open to anyone over 16. If you owe rent or other amounts you will not normally be offered another property. Each case will be individually assessed.

What Are My Choices?

The choice list within the the application form shows how many properties are rented in each area by type and number of bedrooms. The properties that are available to let will vary from day to day. Obviously, if you choose areas where there are a lot of properties then the chance of an early offer is much greater. Housing Officers will be pleased to assist you by discussing your choices with you.  Areas are allocated depending on age.  For full details please visit our website page Where do we have properties?

The list also includes Housing Association properties for which the Council can nominate you.

PLEASE NOTE: THE WAITING LIST FOR DINSDALE COURT, MIDDLETON ST GEORGE IS CURENTLY CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE..  DINSDALE COURT IS TO BE DEMOLISHED AND REBUILT

How Do I Apply?

You need to fill in an application form, give all of the information requested, sign and date the form and return it to a local Housing office. When you hand deliver a form you will be given a receipt immediately. If you need any help you can ask any member of staff. A visit to your home or temporary residence can be arranged when necessary.   It is very important that you keep us up to date with your telephone number.  Any offer of property is telephoned out to you, therefore you could miss out if we do not know your new number!.

If you indicate that you have medical issues we will ask for the following information:

  • The Doctors' diagnosis of your condition
  • How your condition has evolved
  • What treatment you are receiving
  • Have you been referred to a specialist or to a hospital?
  • How your medical condition is affected by your current housing?

We will contact your Doctor if we need further clarification after we have spoken to youi.

Do you have a Criminal Record?

When you complete your housing application form you will be asked to declare if you a criminal record.  It is very important that all convictions are declared.  Should you have any previous convictions we will check the full details with the criminal records bureau.  Some serious offences may exclude you from being housed by  Housing Services.  We may be able to refer you to an alternative housing provider who specialise in housing ex-offenders.  Please speak to a Housing Options Advisor if you require more advice.
