LAS - Frequently Asked Questions

What is accreditation?

A “Code of Standards” relating to the management and physical condition of privately rented accommodation.  Private landlords can be Accredited if they meet and agree to abide by the Code of Standards.

Accreditation is a means of publicly identifying and acknowledging private landlords and their dwelling(s) as being of a recognised higher standard, and will increase the supply of good quality accommodation.

What is the Code of Standards?

Darlington Borough Council’s Code of Standards sets out the minimum standards required for dwelling conditions and housing management.  Landlords who apply to join the Landlord Accreditation Scheme are “Accredited” if they achieve the standards stated in the Code of Standards.

The Code covers the minimum design, safety, contractual, and service delivery standards that tenants can expect when they rent private sector accommodation, and that Accredited Landlords can promote as part of their letting service.

The Code of Standards has been developed based on National Good Practice, as recommended by the Accreditation Network UK (ANUK).

ANUK is an independent national organisation that was formed in May 2002 to publicise, promote and share good practice in Accreditation.  This was in response to the increasing popularity of Accreditation across the UK.
