Plan your Escape

Make sure everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire.
Ensure your door and window keys are easily accessible
The best escape route is your normal way in and out of the house so keep it clear.
Choose a second escape route if the first is blocked
If you can't escape choose a room for everyone to wait in until the Fire Service arrives

Before you open a door check it with the back of your hand. If it is warm do not open it. The fire could be right outside
If the door is cool, stay low and open the door, if safe get everyone outside and call 999.

Get everyone into the same room, close the door and block the bottom of the door off with a blanket
Open the window and call for help. If you need to break the window use a sharp object in the bottom corner
If you feel you need to exit the window - hang and drop. Make sure you break your fall with bedding or cushions. Do not jump
Do not waste time gathering personal belongings
If your clothes catch fire - stop drop and roll

Turn off and unplug any unnecessary appliances unless they are designed to stay on
Check the cooker is switched off
Turn off heaters and electric blankets
Put out candles and cigarettes properly
Close internal doors, this slows the spread of fire and smoke
Do not leave your washing machine operating at night
Switch your television off. Do not leave on standby
Make sure you have a working smoke alarm on every floor
Check smoke alarms weekly
Plan your escape
Know where your door and window keys are
