Joint Tenancies
A joint tenancy is where more than one person is the tenant of a property. Due to a variety of reasons (for example a relationship breakdown or divorce), the joint tenants may both agree for one of the tenants to have their name removed from the tenancy, whilst the other remains. This is known as 'joint to sole tenancy'.
Tenancies cannot be 'altered' - to remove one tenant, the entire tenancy ends, and a new sole tenancy is created.
