Introduction
A Mutual Exchange under the Housing Act of 1985 is when one Council tenant swaps their home with another Council tenant or Housing Association tenant. (Council tenancies must be secure tenancies and not introductory tenancies).
Why Exchange?
You may be in a house that is larger or smaller than your needs or you would prefer to move to another area in the Town. Other tenants may feel the same way and may be willing to swap houses with you.
How Do I Exchange?
You will need to be on the Council's Transfer List. If you are not, contact your local housing office or complete a Housing Application Form - pdf document
The Council keeps an up to date list of all tenants who would like to do a swap. Find a suitable person from the list who you wish to exchange with and make arrangements to view each others properties.
Apply in Writing
Once you have found a match you must both put your request in writing to your local housing office. A Housing Officer will then visit you both, inspect each room and check the details on your application form. We will then decide if you can go ahead with the swap.
