Repairs
Once you have completed and returned the Right to Buy application form (RTB1), the process to buy your home is set in motion. The status of the property will be changed to 'Right to Buy Pending' and means that the property's repair status will change to 'wind and water-tight' only. Any repairs other than to ensure that the property is 'wind and water-tight' will therefore not be carried out by the Council they will become your responsibility.
If your home was included in any improvement works programmes, such as
- new kitchen or bathrooms
- central heating
- window replacement
- painting
The property will be deleted from the programme and the above works will not be done.
Once you own your own home you will be responsible for all the repairs and improvements.
Payments (such as water, sewerage and Council Tax) will also be your responsibility.
Contained within the leaflet Are you Considering Buying Your Home [pdf document, 254kb] is a grid where you can set out your possible costs of home ownership. This will indicate the affordability of your home at the present time. You should also bear in mind the prospects of your income changing and how that might affect the property's affordability.
