What is the Enablement Service?
We are a small friendly team delivering discreet free short- term housing related support tailored to your needs and aspirations.
Our aim is to develop your skills and confidence so you achieve independence in every day living.
Most of us aim to be able to live independently in the place we choose to live, but sometimes this is not always possible and we may need some short term support and encouragement. This is where we the Enablement Team may be able to help.
The main aim of 'housing related support' is to develop and sustain an individual’s capacity to live independently in their accommodation. We do not undertake domestic tasks or give personal care but will support and encourage you to do things for yourself.
Some examples of housing related support are:
- Advise and encourage you to live within a budget and make sure you have access to specialist money and advice
- Advising on house hold tasks – for example showing you how to operate appliances and how to keep your home clean and tidy
- Advising on healthy eating and planning meals
- Enabling you to access public transport if this is something you are not confident in doing
- Support you in gaining confidence to access social, recreational, learning and voluntary activities in your area
- Advise and guide you on matters of home safety and repairs
- Signposting to other agencies - such as Lifeline Services, Adult Services, Citizens Advice
Who can receive the service?
The Enablement Service is free for all residents of Darlington aged 55 years and above. We welcome self referrals or from a third party.
Once a referral is received we will visit you at home and discuss our service together with your goals and expectations.
Support is provided for a maximum period of three months/12 weeks and places are allocated according to your support needs. We will keep a waiting list if demand exceeds our capacity.
Once accepted we will visit your home usually for an hour or two per week and will help you work towards achieving your goals.
